our history

The Vazzoler is a strictly mountaineering and historical refuge, since its inauguration dates back to 30 June 1929. The name is given in honor of Mario Vazzoler, the founder of the CAI section of Conegliano.

Among the various famous hikers who stopped at the refuge in 1930 we can mention Andrich, E. and B. Castiglioni, Gilberti, Rudatis, Tissi and Mary Varale.

The fame achieved has crossed borders: on September 11, 1931, Alberto Rety of Brussels (he is the King of Belgium nda), Aldo Bonacossa, Paola Wiesinger and Hans Steger make the crossing of the Torre Venezia. And in 1931 Tissi, Andrich and Rudatis climb the Trieste Tower to the west edge. In 1933 it was the turn of Leopold de Belgique (later King of Belgium, after the death of his father during a solitary climbing nda) who with Attilio Tissi, Carlo Franchetti, Giovanni Andrich and Domenico Rudatis made the "first" at the Brabant Bell Tower .

Due to the happy location, the excellent management, the great mountaineering possibilities offered by the countless "routes", open and open, the refuge is increasingly popular, both by famous climbers and simple hikers. The increase in attendance is constant: from 360 signatures in 1930, to 715 in 1935. So much so that a few years later the accommodation capacity is inadequate to the requests. So in 1935 the Section decided to increase the number of beds from 23 to 40. We are in the "twenty years" and the Regime wants its part! In fact, especially in the period of the "conquest of the Empire", there is no lack of “oceanic” gatherings and gatherings in front of the Venice and Trieste Towers. E.g. on June 30, 1935, the Belluno Youth Combat Bundle was present with a Legion of 500 young fascists. That day, as shown in the Summit Book, a "sword" was placed on the Torre Venezia, then removed in August 1943 by two Coneglian mountaineers.

Unfortunately the winds of war lap the refuge. In fact, starting from the 39/40 years, due to the involvement of Italy in the war events that will upset not only Europe, the Vazzoler is sometimes transformed into a military provision. It is the Alpine troops in training who climb the Torre Venezia in a war attitude.

Negative for the attendance and management of the refuge is - in this period - the effect of the "food rationing" imposed by the state of war. So the good Marianna (who manages the Vazzoler with her husband Vittorio) must do her best to guarantee a minimum of hospitality to the diehard visitors who, however, cannot escape the obligation to deliver the "Tessera" coupons for bread, pasta and quota food. However, in the worst case scenario there is always the famous Marianna vegetable minestrone so praised by Giovanni Zorzi.

But at worst there is no limit! In June 1944, by order of the German Command, the closure of the Vazzoler and the other refuges not occupied by the Italian armed forces was ordered. Well, just at that time, the Section instructed Eng. B. Carpenè to design a small church to be erected next to the refuge. The work, entitled to the Madonna della Neve and dedicated to the memory of all the climbers who fell in Civetta, will be inaugurated in 1958. Inside three marble plaques bear the names of over 60 climbers.

After the tragic war period without too many consequences and damages for the refuge, the building and improvement interventions of which the need arises again. Thus the "dependence" (or Tabià) which enriches the refuge with another 30 places is realized: 24 on the first floor and 6 on the p. land; the latter to be used as a winter shelter. It is the year 1947.

The cultural aspect is not overlooked: in 1968 - under the Presidency of Prof. Italo Cosmo - the Botanical Garden “A. Segni ”, located in the immediate vicinity of the refuge on land given free of charge by the Favretti family of Agordo.

In the life of a refuge, and this also applies to the Vazzoler, the contribution given by the managers to the correct and profitable, not only economic, performance is decisive. In this the Vazzoler can be said to be lucky: in 91 years there have only been 6 changes of manager. This is the succession of the families: Ortolan for the first 3 years, Casanova until the post-war period, Da Roit for 32 years, Brustolon for 23 years and Sorarù for the last 18 years, running the management of Doris Corazza and Alessio Chenet since 2020.
